Services: Business Consulting, Executive Coaching for CEO, Leadership Coaching for Management Team

Avi Staiman, Founder and CEO of Academic Language Experts, built a successful small business helping authors publish their research. But he was facing new challenges — both inside the business, as his newly remote team struggled with engagement, and in the broader industry, as authors and publishers grappled with the impact of generative AI.

I initially provided business consulting — helping Avi develop strategic plans, market and competitor analysis, pitch decks, product roadmaps, and go-to-market plans — that led to important pivots for his business. We also identified opportunities for Avi and his management team to hone their leadership skills, communicate more effectively, develop important competencies, and execute their new strategy. Through a combination of rigorous assessments, one-on-one coaching, and facilitated meetings, we have focused on the specific areas that have the most impact on the leaders’ performance, team engagement, and business results.

Effective coaching requires an honest, trusting, and positive relationship between coach and client. The work is serious but never dull!

Here is how Avi describes his experience:

At the start of 2023, I was a bit stuck. My company was experiencing steady growth with happy clients and a growing stream of high-quality leads. However, underneath the surface, there were some serious issues that needed to be addressed.

Our employee turnover and attrition were too high, we needed help cultivating a more meaningful work culture (while working remotely) and engaging our employees in a manner that was appropriate for them and their specific needs (the business book strategies just weren’t working).

It was lonely at the top and I needed some help but wasn’t sure where to turn. I remembered a conversation I had a few years earlier with Amy Beisel about the scholarly publishing industry…. I decided to reach out and see if she would be interested in lending her support.

Best decision ever.

Amy has transformed how we think and operate, combining her attentive listening skills with killer business instincts. She has helped us with strategy, process, & strategic collaboration. She has the rare combination of keen business smarts combined with soft skills that make her a real treasure. Her help has helped me push my career trajectory in the right direction….

Anyone who hires Amy will really be investing in their own growth and development in a truly meaningful way. Whether you are a manager looking to support your employees or want to invest in yourself, speak with Amy and see how she can help.”

Case Study: Team Manager

Services: Leadership Coaching, Career Coaching

When Ellie* came to Beisel Coaching, she was overseeing a fully-remote global project team at a large publisher. The team was struggling with coordination, communication, deadlines, and accountability.

As we dove into the particulars of this situation, I asked Ellie, “What would success look like for this project? What are the ideal outcomes for you and the team?” We talked about what strengths, skills, and experience she could leverage to help her team communicate better, make concrete progress, and start meeting deadlines. Week after week, she made small, important changes that accumulated to have a big impact.

As we continued working together, Ellie began applying these concepts to other areas of her professional life. She started asking herself — what would success look like in her career? What would her ideal role be? What strengths, skills, and experience could she potentially bring to a different position?

Through these questions and our evolving coaching work, she decided to look for a new role that better aligned with her professional goals.

Ellie felt confident going into job interviews because she had done so much work through coaching to understand her strengths and skills — and now she could also talk about her experience leading a successful project team. In the end she received four (!) excellent job offers and accepted one with a large compensation increase that allows her to work on a subject that really matters to her.

You can hear more about Ellie’s story on the Velocity of Content podcast.
